Over the past few years, colored diamonds have captured more attention as famous personalities announce their engagements with colored, or “Fancy” diamonds. Most recently, Kelly Clarkson announced her engagement to fiance Brandon Blackstock by tweeting an image of her impressive canary yellow ring. While white, or clear diamonds were previously the most sought after, today fashionistas are showcasing their style with a little bit of added color. Amidon Jewelers doesn’t want you to be left on the wrong side of the rainbow when it comes to Fancy diamonds, so we’ve put together our own buying guide to get you started. Please feel free to contact us with any further questions you may have. Fancy diamonds can be found in nature in a variety of colors including pink, yellow, green, blue and red. While a white diamond is graded based on the 4 C’s, or Cut, Clarity, Carat, and Color, so too are colored diamonds. The only difference is that while white diamonds are given higher value when they have less color, Fancy diamonds are valued higher when the saturation of its color is more intense. The color saturation of colored diamonds falls into the following categories: Faint, Very Light, Light, Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Dark, Fancy Intense, Fancy Deep and Fancy Vivid. The Hope Diamond is among the most famous of all Fancy diamonds. Originally sold to King Louis XIV of France in 1668, this 7-carat deep blue diamond was donated to the Smithsonian Institution by Harry Winston, Inc. in 1958.
