Long, Cold Nights And Jewel Heist Movies

By: Amidon Jewelers

When the time changes and the nights grow long and cold, many of us like to stay in and watch a movie. And lots of us enjoy movies that show characters behaving in ways we never would in real life. At least not if we value our life, liberty, health and marriage. So in that spirit of enjoying a story we would never condone in real life, here are a few jewel heist movies to entertain you on those long nights.     Asphalt Jungle Dating back to 1950, this gritty noir reinforces the idea that crime doesn’t pay, but it’s fun to watch while eating popcorn. An ex-con recruits some skilled pals to rob a jewelry store. But things go oh-so-wrong for this gang. John Huston directed this film based on a novel by W.R. Burnett. Stars include Sterling Hayden, Sam Jaffe, Jean Hagen and a small part by pre-famous Marilyn Monroe. Asphalt Jungle was nominated for four Academy Awards and, in 2008, the Library of Congress and the United States Film Registry deemed it of cultural,       Pink Panther Movies   Many viewers mistakenly remember Peter Sellers’ character, the clumsy Inspector Jacques Clouseau, as being nicknamed the Pink Panther. Actually, that moniker referred to a fabulous and ginormous pink diamond that periodically  appeared, disappeared and reappeared throughout the course of the 11-movie Pink Panther series. The fictional gem got its name because of an inclusion which, when held the right way in the right light, resembled a leaping panther. The original film, called simply The Pink Panther, was released in 1964. The diamond stars in six of the 11 movies, including The Return of the Pink Panther, Trail of the Pink Panther and Curse of the Pink Panther. The movie’s theme song by Henry Mancini also became much beloved by fans.   In a case of art inspiring real life, Interpol has given the name Pink Panthers to an international jewel thief network credited with more than $500 million worth of robberies. The gang has struck Switzerland, Japan, Dubai, France, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, France, Monaco, Spain and Germany.     Blue Streak   This 1999 film depicts every jewel thief’s nightmare: While the main character is stealing a giant diamond, the police arrive on the scene. The thief manages to hide the diamond in an air duct of a partially constructed building. After he does a couple of years in prison, he sets out to retrieve the diamond, only to discover that his chosen place of concealment is now the new police department! He has to pose as a police officer to gain access. But bonding with his cop partner changes his life. Mark Lawrence, Luke Wilson and Peter Greene star.     Okay. Now that you’ve watched some heist movies, remember that if you’re not locked up, you’re living the good life. Just ask 82 year-old jewel thief Doris Payne, who just last week was arrested for her latest heist, allegedly stealing a $22,500 ring from a Palm Springs jewelry store. Bad habits are hard to quit, even for people who are old enough to know better and should be enjoying retirement! So stay on the straight and narrow, and enjoy the evil-doing side of life vicariously. With popcorn.
